Methodology

DocGen Guide lists tools that turn data into documents. Every page is built from one record per tool, and the rules below decide what is listed, in which order, at which price and on which pages. There is no paid placement and no score.

01

What is listed

The guide lists 128 tools. Each record was collected by hand from the vendor's own pricing and product pages, marketplace listings (Google Workspace and HubSpot) and the public G2 and Capterra pages, and every price was read on 20 Oct 2026. The record keeps the page it was read from and the date.

A record states the data sources a tool reads, the formats it writes, the documents it is built for, who it is built for, its template editor, pricing model, starting price, free tier and deployment. 10 tools reach their data sources, apart from an API, only through Zapier, Make, n8n or webhooks; their records say so and their rows carry a "via Zapier" stamp.

15 tools are proposal, e-sign, contract or rendering products that also generate documents. They are listed after the rest on every list and are not eligible for a Top badge or the questionnaire.

02

How lists are ordered

Every list on the site uses the same order, and nothing in a record is a rank. Proposal and e-sign products go last. On a page about one data source, tools that connect to that source directly come before tools that reach it through Zapier, Make or n8n. Editor's picks come next; there are 10. After that, tools are ordered by the number of reviews on G2 and Capterra combined, then by whether a price is published, then by how many sources and outputs they cover, and finally by name, A to Z.

Editor's picks are chosen by the editors from the tools listed. "Top 25" on alternatives and pricing pages means the first 25 tools in this order across the whole guide.

03

Prices

The price shown is the cheapest paid plan per month, in US dollars. When a vendor publishes both monthly and annual billing, the annual-billed figure per month is used. A price published only per year is divided by 12. A price quoted by a third party and not by the vendor is kept in the record notes and not shown as the price. 77 of the 128 tools publish a price the guide can show; the rest are quoted on request or not published.

12 vendors price in euros or Australian dollars. Their prices are converted at a fixed rate, 1.08 US dollars per euro and 0.65 US dollars per Australian dollar, as of 20 Oct 2026, rounded to the dollar and marked "converted" next to the native figure.

Corrections come from public sources: the listing follows the vendor's own pricing page, and a vendor whose page has changed can send the link to hello@docgenguide.com.

04

Which pages exist

A page for a combination, such as Airtable to PDF or Airtable to PDF for invoices, exists only when at least 3 tools match it. A page whose list would be the same as the broader page above it, in the same order, is not built either. Thinner pages redirect to the nearest broader page.

Source to output pages are capped at 120 and source to output pages for one document type at 150, keeping the ones with the most tools. This build has 71 and 150 of them, 374 generated lists in all, and 1037 redirects for the combinations that did not make a page.

05

Badges

A badge states one fact from a record and is recomputed on every build. Works with a source and Outputs a format follow the record's sources and outputs. API first goes to tools that take JSON through an API and list developers as a buyer. Self-hosted, Open source and Free tier follow deployment and the free plan. Line items and Bulk generation go to records where that capability is confirmed.

The Top badge for a source goes to the first 3 tools on that source's hub in the order above, skipping proposal and e-sign products. Editor's pick goes to the editors' choices. Badges cannot be bought or applied for; the badge gallery lists them all with their holders.

06

The questionnaire

The questionnaire considers only tools that read the chosen data source and write the chosen output, leaving out proposal and e-sign products. Each tool scores 3 for the source, 3 for the output, 1 when it is built for the chosen document type, 2 when it is built for the person who sets it up, and 1 for an editor's pick. A tool that reaches the source only through Zapier, Make or n8n loses 1 point when another tool in the list reaches it directly.

A number between 0 and 1, drawn from the hour and the answers, is added to every score so that equal scores are ordered the same way for everyone within the hour. The three highest scores are shown, each with the reason it fits.

07

Publisher's product

SourceToDocs is owned by the publisher of this site; it is listed under the same rules as every other tool, gets no editor's pick, no scoring bonus and no Top badge.
