Google Sheets is the most common place to start a mail merge. A row becomes a certificate, an invoice or a letter, and the PDF lands in Google Drive. The options range from free add-ons to paid tools that also read other sources. Prices in this guide were checked on 20 Oct 2026.
The native option
Google Sheets has no built-in document generation. Apps Script can merge rows into Google Docs if you write the code, and a script can then save each document as a PDF. Apps Script can run on edit or on a time trigger.
This route costs nothing beyond Google Workspace, but someone has to write and maintain the script. Most teams use an add-on instead.
The Zapier, Make or n8n path
An automation platform can watch a sheet for new rows and send each one to a document generation tool. This suits sheets that receive rows from other systems, and teams that already run Zapier or Make.
- Documentero reaches Sheets through Zapier, Make or n8n. It uses Word templates and outputs DOCX, XLSX and PDF. Paid plans start from $19.50 a month, and the free tier is a one-time 50 documents.
- MailMergic merges Sheets data into PDF forms and connects to Zapier. The Pro plan starts from $39 a month billed yearly, and the free tier gives 100 watermarked documents. It also has an offline desktop app.
- Plumsail Documents works through Zapier and Make with Word templates and outputs PDF, DOCX, XLSX and PPTX. A third-party review lists it from $25 a month billed annually for 200 documents.
Dedicated tools
These add-ons and tools read the spreadsheet directly. Add-ons run from the Extensions menu or on a schedule.
- SourceToDocs reads the sheet, writes Google Slides and Google Docs, and exports PDF, PPTX and DOCX from Google Docs templates. It starts from $19 a month billed annually ($24 monthly), and the free plan covers 1 document a month.
- Autocrat is a free Sheets add-on with merge tags in a Google Docs template. It outputs PDF, Google Docs and email.
- Form Publisher uses Google Docs or Word templates and outputs PDF, Google Docs, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX and Google Slides, with an approvals workflow. It starts from $8.25 a month ($99 a year), and the free tier covers 20 submissions a month.
- Document Studio uses Google Docs templates and outputs PDF, Google Docs, Google Slides, email and e-signature through Zoho or Adobe Sign. The Standard plan is $79 a year, about $6.58 a month, and the trial covers 25 documents a month.
- Docs Creator is a mail merge add-on with Google Docs templates. The free tier covers 150 documents a month, and the Plus plan is EUR 50 a year, about $5 a month.
- DocsAutomator uses Google Docs, Word or PDF form templates and outputs PDF, Google Docs and email. It starts from $19 a month billed yearly; the free option is limited to watermarked previews.
- Portant uses Google Docs or Word templates and outputs PDF, Google Docs, Google Slides, DOCX, PPTX and e-signature documents. It starts from $42 a month billed annually, and the free plan covers 30 documents a month.
Free add-ons such as Docu Merge and Mergery are also on the Google Sheets to PDF page with the rest of the list.
Which route to pick
For a one-off batch, such as certificates after an event, a free add-on is enough. Autocrat is free, and Docs Creator gives 150 documents a month at no cost.
For a steady volume, compare the free allowance with your monthly count. Form Publisher’s free tier stops at 20 submissions, Portant’s at 30 documents and Docs Creator’s at 150. Above that, the cheapest paid plans here start at about $5 to $8 a month on annual billing.
Line items are harder in a spreadsheet. One row usually equals one document. If an invoice needs several rows of products, check that the tool can group rows or read a second tab. The records on this site do not yet confirm that for these tools, so test it during the trial.
If the sheet is fed by another system, the Zapier or Make path lets you generate a PDF the moment a row appears. If people edit the sheet by hand, an add-on with a scheduled or on-edit run keeps everything inside Google Workspace.
If you need code-level control and have someone to maintain it, Apps Script costs nothing extra. For every Google Sheets option, including Docs and Slides outputs, see document generation for Google Sheets.
